What Are SMART Goals?
SMART stands for:
- Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve.
- Measurable: Ensure your goal can be tracked and measured.
- Achievable: Set realistic and attainable goals.
- Relevant: Align your goals with your values and God’s purpose for your life.
- Time-bound: Set a deadline to accomplish your goal.
Setting God-Centered Goals
- Start with Prayer: Seek God’s guidance before setting your goals. Ask Him to reveal His plans for your life in 2025. Jeremiah 29:11 promises, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”Reflect on 2024: Take time to evaluate the past year. What did you achieve? Where did you struggle? How did you grow spiritually, emotionally, and physically?
- Write It Down: Habakkuk 2:2 instructs us to “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.” Writing your goals not only makes them tangible but also serves as a reminder of what you’re working towards.
- Break It Down: Large goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller, actionable steps. For example, if your goal is to deepen your relationship with God, start by committing to daily Bible study or joining a small group.
- Stay Accountable: Share your goals with a trusted friend, mentor, or group. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us of the importance of community: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.
- Encouragement to Stay the Course
Here are some practical tips to stay motivated:
- Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate progress, no matter how small.
- Revisit Your Why: Remind yourself of the reason behind your goals. Keep God’s purpose for your life at the forefront.
- Use Affirmations: Speak life over your goals. Declare scriptures and positive affirmations daily, such as, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) and “God’s grace is sufficient for me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
- Keep Moving Forward: Even when you stumble, remember that God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Get back up and keep going.
- “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
- “God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.”
